Powell's Technical bookstore used to be in this building. They had several vintage computers along the north wall.

This was Rocco's pizza for years and years. Although their pizza wasn't the best, I still went there a lot because it reminded me of living in Portland in the mid 90's.

I remember in 1997 when I was temping for an unnamed banking corporation. One day I went in there and the people were freaking out because another unnamed banking corporation had just bought them out.

To "celebrate", the suits ordered about 100,000 pizzas from Rocco's. By the end of the day there were pizzas everywhere. We had to watch a hastily produced video of the two CEOs being all chummy saying how great things would be (a year later: a lot of people lost their jobs and customers left in droves). I didn't really care since I was leaving to ride my bike down the Pacific Coast Highway. I'm still mad at myself for not swiping one of the VHS tapes though...it would be "youtube gold".

Anyways! As of this writing the building is currently closed and is in the midst of being revamped as "Sizzle Pie".

While I was taking photos I also got a clock photo with nice guy Steve the Street Roots vendor in front of Powell's.

This was an antique store when I took this photo, Nnw it is Jackpot Records.

I remember going into this place around 1992 when it was a different record store. I was obsessed with Pink Floyd at the time and the store had an original movie poster for La Vallée up on the wall.

Now it is a Buffalo Exchange clothing store.

Outside the Spartacus store. Trafific was too heavy to stand in the street so the angle is a bit off.

Ringler's Annex bar is still here, although it was closed the morning I took the 2011 photo.

There used to be a large used bookstore here...now it is an American Apparel store.

Bonus trivia: across the street is the building where Louie Louie was recorded in the 60's. I have a 2004 clock photo of that place before it got (recently) remodeled.

Outside the Crystal Ballroom. I can't remember what show they were waiting for but I do remember running into the guy dressed in business-casual clothes a couple months after I took this photo. I had asked him if he wanted to be in a clock photo and he said "sure, but you have one of me already outside the Crystal Ballroom".

My friend Joe outside the Crystal Ballroom. He and I spent a few hours in 2001 taking all the photos that are up Burnside and into NW Portland.

No much changed other than the giant condos.

Apparently it is more of a social given in 2011 that you can't smoke in stores anymore.

Talk about limited hours. No more Tod's Corner apparently.

At the Portland Firefighters Park. This was one of the things I had no idea was there until Joe and I were out walking around. More on the park here.

Car Wash!

This is not far from the "Dead Kennedys' Pay Phone." (which it is now a Taco Bell and the payphone is long gone)

The is now a "Whole Paycheck" store. Tip: next time you have to walk by there and want some peace and quiet on your lunch break...hold your cellphone up to your ear and have an imaginary argument with someone. Works great for getting the clipboard army to ignore you.
